A Love Story Rooted in Connection, Trust, and the Moments In Between

Photographing Erin and Melissa’s wedding at The Woodwinds felt like witnessing something beautiful come full circle—a day rooted in love, resilience, and the kind of joy that doesn’t need to be forced. From the very beginning, there was a sense of ease and trust that allowed me to document their day as it naturally unfolded, capturing moments that felt honest, emotional, and entirely their own.

The day began in two places—Melissa getting ready at their condo in North Branford, and Erin at the Holiday Inn Branford-New Haven, which is such a convenient option for couples planning a wedding at The Woodwinds and looking for a nearby room block.

Like many couples, spending the morning apart felt a little unfamiliar—when you’re used to doing everything together, it can be one of the more emotional parts of the day.

We planned their first look at the stunning James Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford Center, a space filled with beautiful architecture and beautiful light—an incredibly fitting backdrop for such an important moment in their love story.

I’m always a huge advocate for a first look. It allows you to slow down, take a breath, and share something intimate together before the day unfolds. Away from the crowd, away from phones, it becomes a moment that’s truly yours—and it often gives couples the gift of more time together on a day that goes by far too quickly.

Erin and Melissa’s wedding took place on November 7th—just a week after daylight saving time ended. It’s something many couples don’t initially think about when planning their timeline, but that early sunset can shift the entire feel of a ceremony. While some couples may hesitate at the idea of getting married after dark, it can actually be incredibly beautiful when done with intention.

Their ceremony took place on the back patio at The Woodwinds, surrounded by soft twinkle lights that created a warm, intimate atmosphere. As a photographer, moments like this are where experience really comes into play. Whether it’s using available light or incorporating off-camera lighting in a natural way, the goal is always the same—to preserve the feeling of the moment exactly as it was.

After the ceremony, while guests enjoyed cocktail hour, we were able to step away for a few nighttime portraits before Erin and Melissa took some quiet moments alone.

Because we had completed family formals earlier, they were able take a pause after the joyful ceremony—taking a breath, soaking it all in, and even having a plate of hors d’oeuvres brought to them by the attentive staff at The Woodwinds.

It’s such an important moment that allows couples to truly pause and be present before joining cocktail hour to sip on their signature drinks and clink glasses with the people who came to celebrate them.

The reception that followed was full of energy and emotion—from a confetti entrance to a first dance that had everyone in tears. The rest of the evening unfolded exactly as it should: dancing, singing, cake, and even s’mores to end the night.

The Woodwinds is a venue I’ve photographed at many times, and as someone who lives locally in Branford, it always feels special to work in spaces that are so connected to my own community. Being able to photograph at places like James Blackstone Memorial Library and The Woodwinds—locations that feel like home—adds an extra layer of meaning to the work.

Weddings like Erin and Melissa’s are a reminder of why I love what I do. It’s never just about the timeline or the details—it’s about the people, the connection, and the moments in between that you don’t even realize are unfolding. Being able to document a day that felt so personal, in places that feel like home to me, is something I’ll never take for granted. These are the kinds of days that stay with you—the quiet, the joy, the energy, the emotion—all coming together in a way that feels effortless and real.

If you’re planning your wedding at The Woodwinds or anywhere along the Connecticut shoreline, and you’re looking for a photographer who values presence, connection, and storytelling, I would love to connect.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about perfection—it’s about how it felt.

And when you’re able to truly be present, trust your team, and lean into the moments as they unfold… that’s when everything starts to feel like a touch of magic.
